I love my yoga, It’s part of my life. Its my thing. It’s how I manage my body comfort, emotional and mental wellbeing. It sets me up to feel good in my day and stay centred and balanced.

20 years ago when I started my yoga journey it was all vinyasa , fast and energetic. Since having a child, getting a few injuries and accepting the fact that I’m in my 40’s and not a 13 year old indian boy with raving hormones that need taming.. I prefer restorative yoga practice.

So there’s not that much sweating on the mat, lol, but I do like to keep the mat fresh. Here's a great way to use your essential oils in a yoga mat freshening/ cleaning spray.


aromaYoga Tip 1: Yoga Mat Spray

You'll need:

  • ¾ cup of distilled water
  • ¼ cup of white vinegar
  • 6 drops Lavender
  • 4 drops Tea Tree essential oil
  • Glass spray bottle

Directions:

Combine all ingredients in a glass spray bottle, shake well and spray !


aromaYoga tip 2: Use Balance Essential Oil  

A grounding blend to use at the start of your practice or to share with students.

Balance is a combination of earthy tree oils like frankincense, spruce, blue tansy and rosewood and are all great stabilising, calming oils to get you out of your head and into you body.

Directions:

Rub on your feet at the start of the class then take a few breaths with your hands held over your nose. Its a great way to start any class or treatment as it calms the mind and helps to bring you into the present moment. A beautiful aid for preparing for yoga..


aromaYoga tip 3: Use Oils To Open Your Lungs

Rub Respiratory Blend or Peppermint essential oil onto your chest and over lungs before a workout to open airways and prepare your body for effective oxygenation.

The doTERRA easy air blend is a combination of Laurel Leaf, Eucalyptus Leaf, Peppermint Plant, Melaleuca Leaf, Lemon Peel, Ravensara Leaf, Cardamom Seed essential oils and to help you to clear the airways and breathe easy.

It can also help you to focus your breath whilst practicing your physical practice which is a beautiful way to help bring you into the moment.


aromaYoga Tip 4: Use An Ultrasonic Diffuser In The Yoga Room.

Diffusing creates a soothing ambience. Its also an air purifier and humidifier so it help to hydrate the room which is particularly good when using air-conditioning or heating which can be very drying to the skin and nasal cavities.

It's a great way to prepare a room for students or set one up near your mat for a home practice. 

Diffusion distributes essential oil molecules into the air so effectively through vibration. It keeps the oil structure whole and therefore doesn’t damage the oil as heating would if you use an oil burner.

When essential oils are inhaled through the nose, tiny nerves send an immediate signal to the brain that goes straight to work on the systems that moderate our minds and bodies.

Choose any oil you love, the citrus oils or lemongrass  are tangy and  fresh cleansing aromas as well as being wonderful for uplifting moods

Why not find the oil that works with the style of class you are doing, or how you are feeling on any particular day... Explore what oils work best for you.

Directions:

Just add 5 - 8 drops in your diffuser with some water and turn it on. Easy


aromaYoga tip 5: Savasana / Meditation

Frankincense "the oil of truth" promotes feelings of peace and relaxation as well as improving focus and concentration. Its a wonderful aid for meditation. It can help connect you to your higher self.

The monoterpenes in Frankincense can assist to "re-write" emotions that are stored in your cell receptors. It can help you to shift emotional state and let go of limiting, dense, lower vibrational belief patterns that are clouding your judgement.

Directions:

Apply a drop of frankincense, to the third eye ( between the eye brows ) or on the crown of the head.


aromaYoga Tip 6: Revitalising Yoga Spray

You'll need:

  • ½ cup of water
  • 20 drops of your favourite esential oil
  • For uplifting and revitalising try citrus bliss or wild orange and peppermint
  • Glass bottle.

Directions:

Combine water with essential oils in a glass bottle. Shake well and spray over your head ( or students ) around the room either during class or at the end.


aromaYoga tip 7: HYDRATE HYDRATE HYDRATE

Many of us are dehydrated and don't even know it.

You can be feeling tired, experiencing headaches, general lethargy and heaviness and just need MORE WATER.

Experts say we should drink 3 glasses of purified water upon waking just to start our day and hydrate our cells.

Directions:

Add 2 - 3  drops of a food grade lemon essential oil to a glass of water or add it to your water bottle for a healthy boost throughout the day. Lemon provides cleansing and digestive benefits and supports healthy respiratory function - do this daily!

Remember:

Use glass or stainless steel bottles only as essential oils will eat though your plastic!

Did you know:
